This simple radio receiver was popular in the early days of radio. It is powered only by a crystal detector within the kit which produces a very weak noise from the radio signal it receives. As a result a pair of earphones are necessary to actually hear the broadcast. Newer models would include amplifiers, which would require electricity of some form to power it, and this is how modern radios were made.
