Colour-Coated Ware
Here are a selection of pieces of fine ware - the ceramic is very light, thin and brittle, suggesting this was for use as tableware. There were multiple kiln sites within Britain producing fineware with colour-coating, these particular sherds show a red-orange base colour and a slip coating of dark black or grey, which suggests they are examples of either Nene Valley Colour-Coated or Colchester Colour-Coated wares, both producing vessels around the same time and with a fairly prolific distribution in the region.
These particular sherds were excavated during the investigations at Wickbourne in the 1950s, which yielded a lot of archaeological material from multiple time periods, more of which we hold in the museum!
